Sephora Collection: MicroSmooth Baked Luminizer

Summer is here (well almost!) and who doesn't love to have a glow from within?  I was wondering through Sephora 2 weeks ago (because I cannot visit the mall and not enter my favourite store) and stumbled across this beauty!

This product offers a beautiful golden glow to your skin.  Don't be fooled by the 'white' appearance.  This, like it's similiar counter part Albatross by Nars offers the wearer a non-ashy golden luminized appearance even though the product appears to be white in pan.

The product:  It is said to be infused with radiance-boosting minerals, sea coral and green tea extract!  (talk about makeup making the skin better)

Application:  Since this is a baked pigment, it sweeps on weightless, natural-looking color (pick the shade suitable for your skin tone).

Natural Light Swatch

Flash Swatch

Pros:  A little goes a long way and you can easily build coverage to go from natural/healthy glow to 'goddess'.  I am a fanatatic for great makeup products that offer skin benefits, and this product is said to enhances the natural radiance and the appearance of your skin!

The quantity and quality vs. the price point of the product is a fantastic steal.  This product retails for CDN $17/ USD $12 for

Cons:  There are only 2 shades for this product.  The one I own is called Stardust which I found was more suitable for darker skin tones, while Light Beam is suited more to light/ medium skin tones.

Tips: Apply to cheekbones, temples, browbone and down the bridge of your nose for a gorgeous glow (go with a lighter hand to achieve a natural glow).  I also use this product as a highlighter.

Final thoughts:  I have been using this product religiously for over a week and I find that I am in love.  Maybe, it is time to retire my trusty ole' Lorac Baked Bronzer?  The product's baked formula applies smoothly while the airy texture melts into skin for a natural glow!

Have you tried this product before?

Day & Night Basic Makeup Looks (As Requested)

Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette

I was approached by one of my readers to do a day and night look using the Naked Basics Palette by Urban Decay.  I unfortunately didn't own the palette due owning very similar colours from Urban Decay and other brands, therefore I collected the eye shadows I did have that matched the eye shadows (to the best of my ability) in Naked Basics Palette.

Day Look

Used a neutral brown/taupe (Naked 2) on my lid and a dark brown (mix Faint and Crave) to do a soft cut crease.  Highlight beneath the brow with a matte white colour (Venus) and blend to perfection.

Tips:  Line eyes for more definition.
Use a soft blush and soft lip colour (nude or soft pink)

Within the Naked Basics Palette the shades range from light to dark to create basic but versatile looks.  From Left to Right they are:

Venus (soft, off-white demi-matte)
Foxy (very light yellow/white matte)
Walk of Shame (very light nude matte)
Naked 2 (taupe matte),
Faint (warm, dusty brown matte)
Crave (deepest, darkest brown/black matte)

I used what I had to create the looks keeping the above noted shades in mind. I used:

Urban Decay shadow in Buck (similar to Faint in the Naked Basics)
Kat Von D shadow in Leather (Matte deep dark brown used to warm up Buck)
Kat Von D shadow in Lucifer (Matte black similiar to Crave in the Naked Basics)
Smashbox shadow in Nude (similiar to Walk of Shame  in the Naked Basics)
Smashbox shadow in Vanilla (similar to Venus in the Naked Basics)

Night Look

Used a satin off white colour on the lid (Venus) Then continue with a wash of soft brown (Faint) on the entire crease from outer V to inner tear duct.  Deepen your outer V with a black shadow (Crave).  Highlight your brow with Foxy for the perfect finish!

Tips:  Use a bold lip to make this look more sultry.
Add a strong winged liner to the look.

Thank you Penelope, for the opportunity to play with my makeup with you in mind. It allowed me to push myself a bit further because I took into account your eye shape and skin tone.  If you have any other questions and or request please let me know.

Reviving Used Lashes (getting the curve back!)

As I was cleaning up a pair of used lashes, I thought it would be a great idea to come
onto my blog and share a makeup tip.

The lashes shown are a generic brand given to me by a close friend who visited Vietnam late last year.  These are by far my favourite daytime 'natural' lashes.  However since the did come from internationally and I can't seem to find them on Ebay (I have to ensure I am super careful with them).

This post is a quick one to show how I restore the curve on my lashes after thoroughly
cleaning them.

All Adhesive is off the lash

Before: As you can see the lash on the left is completely flat and therefore very difficult to
apply to the lash line to give a seamless appearance.

After: The lash on the right has been restored and has a beautiful curve without adding heat. I am sure these lashes are of a plastic composition (therefore not even an option to add heat).

How to: Simple, after cleaning and allowing to air dry*, I take the lash and wrap it tautly around
my finger.  Hold and press for about 2 to 3 minutes and VOILA!  The lashes are then stored in a
clear case until ready for use.  No re bending is needed.

Additional information: I use a scent free antibacterial soap to properly cleanse my lashes.  For stubborn glue pieces I use makeup remover, so I don't have to pull on the 'hairs' and destroy the integrity of the product.

I hope this tip helps you.

Do you have any tips to share with me?

Annabelle: Lip Liners Review

My all time favourite Canadian drugstore lipliners.  If you haven't tried these as of yet, you are missing out.  Here's the breakdown of the product with pictures and swatches!

The Product

Pros: Good staying power with a smooth application.  Comes in a wide range of finishes from original to metallic and even waterproof.

Cons: Pencil has to be sharpened so you waste product and not as accessible as a retractable pencil.

Packaging:  A tight cap covers the actual product for proper storage.  Ensures that the product will not dry out.  The liner was produced in the classic basic
wooden style.

Cost: Depending on the type of pencil you get it can range from $5.95 CDN to $6.95 (Very affordable)  On the Annabelle website they also do sales so you can get these
products for even cheaper!

Left to Right: Espresso, Cherry & Burgundy

Left to Right: Espresso (Matte Finish), Cherry (Matte Finish) & Burgundy (Satin Finish)

Tip:  I like to wear these liners as a matte lip colour or add a gloss for some shine!

Final thoughts: I love these lipliners.  Great value and more important product.  If you haven't tried these out definitely give them a try

My favourite liner from Annabelle: Cherry*

Spring 2014 Wearable Beauty Trends

With Spring 2014 officially here (based on the calendar but not according to the snow on the ground), I am compelled by my beauty instincts to talk Spring trends of 2014. If you reside in the mid west of the states or anywhere in Canada, I am sure you have been hit with random snow days (with more approaching said the weatherman).  Don't be in despair soon old man winter will fail. And with that being said, lets start with the trends to come!

The Lips

Soft berry (like) lips are always a staple where the is hope for longer days of sunlight and warm weather, and this year is no different.   Think radiant orchid (Colour of the year 2014)!

The much talked about Bright Orange Lips, which could easily be worn if you take into account, your skin's undertone isn't for the faint at heart but lining the lips with a darker hue (reds, browns, purples-yes! purple), to create a 'wearable' ombre effect can make this trend easily wearable and fun!

Some of my favourite orange/shades of orange lippies come from MAC cosmetics.  Namely Morange, Lady danger, Hot chaud and Saigon Summer- all of which are available in the regular line.

The Eyes

Then there was blue, a hue of any blue on the lids will create the perfect match for the warmer weather to come!  Am I the only one who is excited to match Blue eyes and Orange lips?   Will be bold but so beautiful if done right!

Where there is blue, there is green and this season this is no different.  Use a pop of green on your lids to freshen up any look!

The magical ethereal white eyeshadow is a hit this Spring. Therefore if you aren't into the bold blues or dashing greens, you can tone it down with a quick wash of a frosty white.

Metallic eyes are also very in for Spring 2014, wear this bold look in the evening by easily smoking it out. Rustic golden lids featuring pigmented orangey coral lips.  Can you see I'm still
excited about THE orange?

Cat eyes, whether the season is always a fun route to take and this season is no different. Use your favourite liquid or gel eyeliner to create this bold cat eyed look.

I find with the warmer weather approaching and my very oily skin, gel liners will be my best friend for the weather to come due to the staying power.

Skin

Now that drab winter has dried out our skin, it's time to get dewy and radiant. Remember to moisturize your skin and feature some glowing highlights and bronze where needed!

This season features bold colours.  Remember trends are always open to interpretation so have fun, be you and stay beautiful!

What are your favourite Spring 2014 beauty trend?

Guest Blog: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Flawless Wear Concealer

Conceal, conceal, conceal. It’s not that you have anything to hide, let’s call it enhancing some problem areas. At least that’s what I tell myself when I conceal my under eye. If you’ve been looking for an undereye concealer I’ve got just the one for you. Two words, one famous brand. Estee Lauder.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Flawless Wear Concealer, retail price ($27 CAD, 0.24 oz) is my everyday staple concealer. Very lightweight and provides great coverage quickly with its sponge applicator. Check out the picture below:

Without Camera Flash
With Camera Flash

This concealer ranges in various colours from Extra Light to Extra Deep. I happen to be a Deep (see image below). When I’m rushed for time, trying to head out at 7:00am, this concealer allows me to save time quickly. I absolutely love it. I own other concealers, but this has been my favourite for my everyday work look.

So you get the gist of it, appears as a darker colour before on application, but when the flash is used appears lighter in colour. I call it concealer magic. See below the boxes the applicator comes in:

Your best friend is a concealer. Don’t leave home without it. It’s a bit pricey, but in comparison to other high end brand concealers, I’m loving it. I've had this concealer for approximately 5 months, and it shows no sign of slowing down. It’s best to be lighthanded. I’d highly recommend trying the entire Double Wear line from Estee Lauder, especially if you have combination/oily – more towards oily skin type. This concealer lasts me my entire day from sun up to sun down.

 What’s YOUR favourite under-eye concealer?

Would love to hear from you!

Getting to know a little bit more about me

I wanted to share a little bit more of me with my readers.  So here goes....

As a child and into young adolescence I had a nag for art (visual) as a late teen and into adulthood, I took that skill and love for makeup and combined it.  As a result, I became really good at makeup application.

Self taught freelance makeup artist

My favourite high end makeup line: YSL and Make Up For Ever
My favourite drugstore makeup line: Milani and Revlon

My favourite high end skin care line: Boscia, Estee Lauder and Ole Henriksen
My favourite drugstore skin care line: Neutrogena and Body Shop

My favourite Canadian makeup line: Annabelle Cosmetics
My favourite Caribbean makeup line: Sacha Cosmentics

Hobbies:  I love cooking and nail art (I find it therapeutic).  If you follow my instagram (@daredbeauty) you could see weekly pictures of recipes prepared and nail art done by yours truly.

Blogger secret:  This isn't my first blog.  When I was in my late teens into young adulthood, I had a journal blog.  Unfortunately after a few years, I ended it.

Obsessions?  I have a shoe collection within a full walk in closet and a vanity overstocked with makeup.  In a nutshell, anything that relates to beauty and fashion, I am obsessed.

Share something with me in the comments below, that other bloggers might not know about you?

My Natural Hair: Protective Style

Kinky Twist
(warning #bareface)

For those of my blog readers who aren't aware, I am a naturalista with fine 4c type hair.  Within the recent months, I have found my hair has not been doing so well with the harsh dry cold weather we are receiving in  Canada. Yesterday I decided to sit and finally install a quick (5 hour) protective style.  I haven't done an install on myself in over a year so I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but to my surprise, I did well and wanted to show my handy work!

My Eyebrows

If you don't have eyebrows, you don't really have a face.
Saoirse Ronan

I have recently become obsessed with perfecting my eyebrows.  Especially since I was over waxed and desperately needed to remedy the situation for my own confidence.  With a lot of experimentation, I have finally found the 'perfect' products that make my brows look 'back to normal'.  With this new found regime, I wanted to share my finds.

Here are some before and after pictures! (excuse the lack of makeup #barefaced)

Before
After

Impressed?  So was I!

Here is a list of products I used to get my 'perfect brow'.  Oh and did I mention it doesn't budge (even with my oily skin!).

Products:

Anatasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow™ Pomade (creamy smudge-free, waterproof pomade that glides on skin and hair smoothly to create clean and defined brows) available at
Sephora/Ulta

Mac cosmetics Studio fix Concealer (I prefer to use a thicker concealer to ensure clean lines and great coverage

Annabelle Eyebrow in medium brown (allows me to get a more faded brow beginning by toning down the brow pomade)

Tools:

Tarte eyebrow brush (came with Amazonian clay waterproof brow mousse) Great double ended brush that came with a spooly on one end and angled brush on the other.  Offers great application.

Cala Brow/Liner Offers great persision for cream based products (I use this for applying the concealer)

Splurge vs. Save (Dupe Version): Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow vs. Shadow Eyez 12 Hr Wear

Top: Make Up For Ever (Aqua Shadow) in 30 E
Bottom: Milani (Shadow Eyez) Champagne Toast

One of my favourite high end makeup brands is Make Up For ever, due to the versatility in products and overall quality. With that being said, high end is always going to be pricey and today I come with a dupe to one of their popular products (with a dupe shade!).

As I was cleaning through some of my shadows and pencils I stumbled across Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow and Shadow Eyez 12 Hr Wear. When I saw them at a quick glance, it seemed to be the same colour. Yes, ladies I wasn't aware I had a hiding dupe in my stash. As much as I love makeup, I am not one for buying two of the same product! So I decided to do a quick swatch to confirm what my naked eyes already knew. And guess what? Same shade, finish and texture. I am referring specially to Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow (30E) and Shadow Eyez 12 Hr Wear (Champagne Toast).  Both shades can be described in colour as a pearly pink beige.

Let's Look in Depth

Side by side comparison! (Can you spot the difference?

Formula:

Though I consider these two dupes (very close to being identical), the Milani champagne toast has a very slight frostier finish. However has seen in the swatch above, they look the exact same when tested against my skin tone!

Longevity:

I have to say that both formulas, stand the test of time. I wore both for 10 hours and the wear of them were the same!

Packaging Details:

Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow (4 grams of product), I find aqua shadow to have a more secure cap on the pencil. Which in the long term prevents the product from drying out.
Milani Shadow Eyez 12 Hr Wear (2.8 grams of product), has a bit of softer application (applies smooth as butter!)

Final Thoughts: Definitely SAVE! If I knew I had the Milani shadow pencil in champagne toast, the Make Up For Ever Aqua Shadow would've stayed on the shelf :)!

Have you ever found a dupe in your stash?

Maybelline Baby Skin Instant Pore Eraser

Canada has finally released Maybelline's Baby Skin.  I scooped up this product weeks ago when I visited New York and was ecstatic when I finally got my hands on it.  I have heard many great things about this product, one of which was to compare it to Benefit's Porefessional (which I cannot do a comparison on because I have never continuously used that product).  This product retails for $6.99/ $9.96 (USD/CDN) for 20 ml of product.  The product can be found in CVS, Walgreens and Walmart in the States and so far I have only seen this product in Walmart Canada.

Maybelline describes this product as being a lightweight and transparent gel that has a cherry extract which will transform your skin into a youthfully smooth and matte base for makeup wearers and non makeup wearers on the go.

When using this product you will notice your pores looking blurred instantly, this is due to the silicon elastomer, silicia and emollient formula.  The high silicone content in this product encourages foundation to glide onto your skin without leaving any patches or streaks.

Pros: This product definitely smooths skin, prevents some shine- blotting is still required (great for combination to oily skin) and is suitable for sensitive acne prone skin.  I love the fact that Maybelline took the extra step to add a beneficial addictive (cherry extract) to this product.  After doing some research, cherry extract is great as an antioxidant, it boosts production of collagen, elastin and it encourages the skin to retain moisture.  This product is clear, therefore on my deeper skin tone there is no tint.

Cons: Though this product claims to be fragrance free it does have a slight alcohol smell (that eventually fades).  Upon application, the gel like product will seem to be oily but after the product settles onto the skin, the product just feels smooth and silky to the touch.

Tips:  Since this product does not claim to help with oil control (though all the ingredients lends to implying that is does), I applied it as such and the results were great on my skin (please note I am reviewing this in colder temperatures).  I found even with my very oily skin, this product didn't make my skin appear oilier.  Less is definitely more with this product due to the texture.

Before and After

Overall, I loved this product and will be a repurchasing it!  Have you tried it?

bareMinerals High Shine Eyecolors

bareMinerals High Shine Eyecolors in Meteorite

This product was bought as part of a duo set from Sephora at an amazing price of $12. Usually a $48 CDN price point for 2 x 0.05oz of product.  This product is a vibrant, pigmented metallic eye shadow.   It has a smooth formula that feels velvety to the touch.  It also has a true opaque finish, that also lends to doing 'foiled' looks.  This product can also be used as a wet application. Like the name suggests this is a high shine loose pigment like shadow.

Pros: This product is very pigmented and opaque.  A little will go a long way.  This product reminds me of having a 'foiled' look without doing all that work.  However, if want to intensify that 'foiled' look, go through the process and you'll have a fantastic look.

Cons:  This product can get a little messy when using due to it's pressured 'pop up' application wand.

Tips: Use a tackier base for the shadow to stay all day.  This product works even better when using the 'foil' (wet) technique.  When applying tap, the wand applicator to reduce fall out and have an overall cleaner application.  Having a lighter hand upon application would benefit you, since this product is truly pigmented.

Jamberry Nails (Final Review)

Before you read my final review, did you read my initial review of Jamberry Nails?

Jamberry Nails worn as an accent nail (1.5 weeks after initial application)

I wore my Jamberry Nails for approximately 2.5 weeks, and overall I was impressed with this product. With slight lifting (on one side), I found this product to be great for women on the go, who like beautiful nail art without the hassle.

To take them off, I just lifted the nail wraps from my nail bed and peeled it off.  There was no damage done to my natural nails.

The longevity

As some of my regular readers would know I have natural kinky hair.  With the Jamberry nail wraps I was a bit concerned that the wraps would get snagged in my hair and my hair products (oils and heavy butters) would lift the wraps easily.  Surprisingly, this did not happen until 2 weeks of wear! I am very impressed by that.  Regular nail polish usually lasts 2-3 days after a fresh paint (as seen in picture below).

Overall, this is a great product and a fantastic gift especially for bachelorette parties, birthday gift bags and wedding parties!

Jamberry Nails after 2.5 weeks of wear vs. regular nail polish (top and base coat) after 2 days of wear.

*Disclosure: This is a sponsored review from a Jamberry Nail Consultant.  The product was not bought, but given for my honest review. Therefore all opinions are my own.
